Top Cat v. TOPcat?

Meet TOPCat, our new mascot. Not to be confused with far more famous, but just as loveable, Top Cat of cartoon fame.

Lots of people of a certain age grew up with the cartoon Top Cat – also known as ‘Boss Cat’ in the UK (in the 1960s/1970s).

The change in name was largely pointless – the music and much of the dialogue still referred to Top Cat. So why bother to change it change it?

Apparently the UK there was a cat food called Top Cat, owned by Spillers Foods. As the BBC doesn’t advertise, the name change was an attempt to prevent this.

The issue went away anyway when the brand name was discontinued in 1999, but other cat foods appear to be using the name.

Originally owned by Hanna-Barbera, the Top Cat ‘franchise’ came to be owned by Warner Bros through a series of acquisitions:

  • Turner Broadcasting System purchased Hanna-Barbera in 1991.
  • Time Warner acquired Turner Broadcasting System in 1996.
  • Whilst Hanna-Barbera didn’t change its name initially, when founder William Hanna died in 2001, it was absorbed into Warner Bros. Animation.

TOPCat by contrast was founded with this website in 2025. It’s owned by TOP – The Ops Portal. So, whilst Top Cat is now an old boy, although still full of fun and cheek, TOPCat is the new kit on the block.

Top Cat challenged the law (in the form of Officer Dibble, seen above). TOPCat, by contrast, tries to stay the right side of the law! TOP endeavours to help clients stay the right side of the law using their ops manual.

If Top Cat was an alley cat, streetwise, TOPCat aims to have a far more professional and business like persona. (TOP can be branded the way customers prefer – although we do try and help them stay legal!)

Top Cat flies through life with not a care or a plan. TOPCat represents the planning and effort to keep all team members ‘on the same page’ (made easier, of course, by TOP.)

Of course, the serious side of this is that TOP can help companies protect their brands by ensuring that their brand assets are properly used, and to ensure that there is a level of consistency in everything associated with the brand. Customers learn quickly whether to trust brands. One bad review can sometimes prove devastating.

So whilst we love you Top Cat, welcome to the world, TOPcat!
